Biblical Rest: Let’s Talk About It

Date

For The Burdened Soul

Yesterday, when I was in church lifting my hands during worship, I had an unforgettable experience.  Although not visible, an incredible weight pushed down on my arms preventing them from stretching above the right angle made with the bend of my elbows.  It wasn’t just weight, however.  It was fullness, like carrying a huge load of laundry in your arms the size of an exercise ball.

Immediately, God told me that this weight was the load we’re all currently carrying; the prayers about the elections; our concerns about family members; and worries about our futures due to wars, high prices, and natural disasters.

But God knows that if we continue carrying this heaviness, we’ll buckle at the knees.

So, I have good news for you today. The Bible says that if we come to Jesus, we can find rest for our souls.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29 NIV)

We can all relate to this astounding act of nurture.  Imagine seeing a little girl coming in your direction with a whole bunch of grocery bags, and then taking them and giving her a ride the rest of the way home.

God is kind in this way.

When we come to him, he has rest for us.  Fellowship with him alleviates our burdens and cares even when circumstances haven’t changed yet.
